The British electronic music pioneer reconnects with the seminal Belgian label for a 15-track album shaped by techno, jazz, soul, improvisation and decades of musical exploration.

Few electronic artists can draw a straight line between the formative years of techno and a new album released more than three decades later.

Dave Angel can.

The British electronic music pioneer returns to R&S Records with A Time And Place, his first full-length album for the seminal Belgian imprint since joining its family in 1991.

Thirty-five years after the release of his landmark 1st Voyage EP, Angel and R&S reconnect for an album that looks beyond nostalgia, instead capturing where the artist stands today — shaped by a lifetime of electronic music, jazz, soul, live musicianship and personal experience.

A Relationship That Started in 1991

Angel’s story with R&S began when label founder Renaat Vandepapeliere discovered his Rolling Thunder project and invited the young London producer to Belgium.

That meeting led to 1st Voyage and a run of releases that helped establish Angel as one of the distinctive voices emerging from the British techno scene.

Further releases including ‘Stairway To Heaven’ and ‘3rd Voyage’, alongside appearances on R&S’s influential In Order To Dance compilation series and releases on sister label Apollo, cemented the relationship.

Now, more than three decades later, A Time And Place brings that partnership into a completely new era.

Rather than attempting to recreate the sound of his early releases, Angel uses the album to explore the wider musical influences that have remained part of his identity throughout his career.

Where Techno Meets Jazz, Soul and Improvisation

Across its 15 tracks, A Time And Place moves beyond conventional techno.

Angel draws from jazz, soul, improvisation and detailed electronic production, creating a record that balances rhythm with melody, atmosphere and emotional weight.

The album is also deeply personal.

Reflections on family, heritage, nature and community run throughout the project, while Angel’s lifelong connection to live music provides an important foundation for its sound.

That background goes back well before his arrival in the techno world. Raised around jazz and live musicianship, Angel has spent decades absorbing sounds beyond the dancefloor.

On A Time And Place, those influences are no longer simply references — they are part of the music’s DNA.

A Collaborative Approach

The album also brings together a diverse group of musicians.

Acclaimed trumpeter Steve Waterman features on ‘Réflexion’ and ‘The Yellow Butterfly’, adding a fluid, jazz-driven voice to both compositions.

Chicago vocal legend Robert Owens appears on ‘Harmony Serenade’, while guitarist Merv Carswell contributes to ‘Sprinkles From Above’.

Angel’s daughter, vocalist Aurii Sky, also appears on ‘Do You Feel What I Feel’, adding a particularly personal dimension to the album.

These collaborations reinforce one of the album’s central ideas: electronic music does not exist in isolation.

Thirty-Five Years Later

For R&S Records, the release represents the renewal of a relationship that helped define an important chapter in the label’s history.

For Dave Angel, it is a reflection of a much longer journey.

A Time And Place acknowledges the artist’s place within British techno history while demonstrating that his musical identity has never been limited to one scene or one generation.

Thirty-five years after 1st Voyage, Angel is once again working with the label that helped launch his career — but this time with an entire lifetime of musical experiences behind him.

The result is not simply a return.

It is the continuation of an artistic conversation that began in 1991 and is still evolving today.

‘A Time And Place’ by Dave Angel is out now on R&S Records across 3LP and digital formats.
