Inner City - Positivity- 3000x3000

Detroit institution Inner City are back with a new generation-focused release that connects the group’s legendary history with the city’s evolving House and electronic music culture.

‘Positivity’, featuring vocalist Steffanie Christi’an, arrives October 16, 2026 via Inner City Detroit, with production from Detroit pioneers Kevin Saunderson and Dantiez Saunderson.

At the center of the record is Christi’an’s commanding vocal performance, surrounded by the rhythmic drive and melodic instincts that have long been central to the Inner City sound.

The result is a record that feels deliberately optimistic without abandoning the dancefloor — House music with soul, Detroit roots and a distinctly contemporary energy.

A Family Legacy in Motion

There is a deeper story behind the collaboration.

Kevin Saunderson helped establish Detroit as one of the most influential electronic music cities in the world, and Inner City became one of the project’s most internationally successful expressions.

Now, with Dantiez Saunderson involved in the creative direction and Steffanie Christi’an joining the lineup, that legacy is being carried forward rather than preserved behind glass.

The collaboration follows ‘Turn Me On’, Inner City and Christi’an’s recent release on Defected’s Glitterbox, suggesting that this current phase of the project is about building momentum rather than revisiting the past.

Todd Terry Meets Detroit

The ‘Positivity’ campaign also brings together two major strands of American dance music history.

The first package pairs the Original Mix with a Todd Terry KMS Dub, bringing the New York House pioneer into the Inner City universe.

The collaboration expands on November 6, when a second package lands with Todd Terry’s full remix, a Remix Edit and a new version from Detroit House veteran Chuck Daniels, alongside an Edit of the original.

It is a fitting collection of names: Detroit and New York, pioneers and successors, different chapters of American dance music meeting around one record.

The Legacy Behind the Record

Inner City was founded by Kevin Saunderson in 1987, during the formative years of Detroit’s electronic music movement.

The group’s debut album Paradise produced two of their most enduring international records, ‘Big Fun’ and ‘Good Life’, while establishing Inner City as a major force beyond the underground.

Since then, the group has sold over six million records worldwide, achieved nine UK Top 40 singles and earned five number-one positions on the US Billboard Dance chart.

Those achievements place Inner City among the defining acts in electronic music history — but ‘Positivity’ demonstrates why the project continues to matter.

Looking Toward 40 Years of KMS

The release also arrives ahead of a major milestone for KMS Records, Kevin Saunderson’s influential label, which approaches its 40th anniversary in 2027.

That anniversary promises to bring renewed attention to one of the foundational institutions of Detroit electronic music.

For Inner City, however, the future is already underway.

With Kevin Saunderson, Dantiez Saunderson and Steffanie Christi’an combining their perspectives, ‘Positivity’ represents a meeting point between Detroit’s foundational sound and the next generation of artists carrying its spirit forward.

And with Todd Terry and Chuck Daniels adding their own interpretations, the project becomes something bigger than a new single: a celebration of American dance music’s continuing ability to evolve without losing its roots.
