SHIFT Brings an Artist-First Model to Electronic Music With Debut Compilation and ADE Launch
New independent label founded by Guy Tolhurst and Grant Nichols aims to replace the traditional track-first approach with long-term artist development, collaboration and career-building.
Electronic music has never been more accessible — or more crowded.
Artists are releasing more music than ever, labels are receiving an endless stream of demos and short release cycles increasingly dominate the industry. Into that environment comes SHIFT, a new independent electronic music label built around a different idea: start with the artist, not the track.
Founded by Guy Tolhurst and Grant Nichols of Nichols+Roark, SHIFT officially launches this October with an artist-first model designed to focus on development, collaboration and long-term career opportunities rather than simply signing individual records.
The philosophy is straightforward. Instead of finding a track first and then deciding whether the artist behind it fits a label, SHIFT begins by identifying the artist it believes in — and then works to build around that artist.
“Labels are overwhelmed, artists are being ghosted, and the whole dynamic has become too transactional,” says Guy Tolhurst. “Constantly sending music into a black hole isn’t good for anyone — creatively or mentally — and we didn’t want to build another label that replicated a model we already knew was broken.”
A Curated Roster, Not an Open Demo Box
SHIFT’s inaugural Season 1 features seven artists: Cristina Tosio, Leena Punks, N1NJA, Seizmic, Sonickraft, TIMANTI and Willis.
Rather than operating as a traditional label that simply signs and releases music, SHIFT plans to work across multiple areas of an artist’s career.
Its roster will release music individually and collectively, collaborate on new projects, remix one another and perform at SHIFT events as well as external shows. The artists will also gain access to the wider network and opportunities being developed around the label.
One of the most notable aspects of the concept is what SHIFT doesn’t offer: an open demo inbox.
The label is intentionally keeping its roster small, allowing its founders to dedicate meaningful time and resources to each artist while also giving those artists the freedom to maintain existing management relationships and release music through other labels.
Grant Nichols describes the thinking behind the model:
“Artists shouldn’t have to become label owners just to release music consistently. By keeping our roster deliberately curated, we can give every artist real attention, build momentum around their music and let them focus on what they do best.”
Transmissions 001 Introduces the SHIFT Sound
The first collective statement from the label arrives with Transmissions 001, SHIFT’s debut Various Artists compilation.
Curated by Nichols+Roark, the release features Sonickraft, Nichols+Roark, Seizmic, N1NJA and Willis, bringing members of Season 1 together while offering listeners an introduction to the creative direction emerging from the SHIFT roster.
The compilation arrives on 16 October 2026, marking the first major release in the label’s story.
An International Launch at ADE
SHIFT will take its next step just days later during Amsterdam Dance Event, with its official launch taking place on Thursday, 22 October 2026 at The Crane Faralda in Amsterdam.
Running from 9:30AM to 4PM, the event will bring together SHIFT’s artists, founders and international network.
The line-up includes Volkoder (Brazil), Cristina Tosio (Spain), Human Rias (Germany), Julian Prince (Canada), Leena Punks (UK), N1NJA (UK), Nichols+Roark (UK), Seizmic (UK), Sonickraft (UK), TIMANTI (UK) and Willis (UK).
For SHIFT, ADE is more than simply a launch party. The event represents the physical expression of the label’s wider philosophy — bringing artists and industry figures together through performance, collaboration and meaningful connections.
From Record Label to Artist Ecosystem
The ambition behind SHIFT extends well beyond releasing records.
Tolhurst and Nichols are developing the project as an independent music company connecting releases, artist development, events, collaborations and industry opportunities.
The objective is to create an ecosystem where artists can develop over multiple seasons rather than being judged by the performance of a single track.
In a market increasingly built around algorithms, constant content and rapid release cycles, SHIFT is taking a different position: invest in the artist first and allow the music to follow.
Transmissions 001 is released on 16 October 2026, followed by SHIFT’s official ADE launch at The Crane Faralda in Amsterdam on 22 October.
